Report on Southern Area Region 6 IEEE meeting 11/05/2011
The Fall 2011 meeting was held at Cal State University Los Angeles on the first Saturday in November. This meeting was an opportunity for the various student branches to meet and exchange information on their respective campus based IEEE programs. Student officers from Cal Poly University Pomona, California Baptist University Riverside, and UC Riverside were in attendance from the Foothill Section. In addition, students from UCLA, Cal State University Long Beach, Cal State University Los Angeles, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo came prepared to exchange information on their activities.
It was a good opportunity for the campus leaders to meet face to face, and talk about future joint activities. There is interest in micromouse and microrobot competitions, as well as setting up hands-on instrumentation programs (at UCLA ) to help lower division students get familiarity with real electronic measurements.
One highlight of the meeting, from the perspective of the Foothill Section, was the presentation of awards to Professor Art Sutton and to the student IEEE branch at Cal Baptist University Riverside.

The afternoon session involved presentations by Region 6 Director Ed Perkins from the Oregon Section, and Region 6 Director Elect Mike Andrews from the Phoenix Section. Ed Perkins, responding to a student’s question on obtaining information on student lists, gave a demonstration on the SAMIEEE computer data system.
The main topic of student officer training was covered in depth by Mike Andrews. Not only was it a student training session, but it was a strong motivational talk on “why the IEEE is important in your professional life and why it helps your professional career”. Mike encouraged everyone in attendance to take advantage of the information found on the IEEE website, or obtained through their section officers, to contact via email any IEEE members in the world for EE technical information.
