This meeting would be of interest to all our IEEE Foothill Section members from our COMSOC chapter. The question behind this presentation really is, “Do you and your friends want to watch video on your wireless mobile device? How about watching some sports events live while you have to do some task for your spouse on a busy Saturday afternoon?” If the answer is positive, then do we have the communication engineering developed to make it happen readily and economically? To any Foothill members who attend, please come back with a short report on this San Diego meeting.

Optimizing Media Services on LTE with eMBMS/LTE Broadcast
Speakers: Kai Tang and Norman Tyrell, Qualcomm
IEEE Broadcast Technology Society San Diego Chapter and IEEE Communications Society San Diego Chapter Joint Technical Meeting
Program:
By some estimates video delivery on mobile networks will account for more than 70% of mobile data demand within the next few years. LTE (Long Term Evolution) broadcast offers MNOs (Mobile Network Operators-wireless) a cost-effective broadcast solution that is industry standardized, supported by a growing ecosystem of vendors and offers the flexibility, capability and control to manage network capacity for both real-time and non-real time data. This session will review eMBMS(evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) technology and the standard status, discuss key service opportunities, provide an end-to-end solution overview, and show how LTE broadcast is an essential strategy for optimizing media delivery on LTE networks.
Speaker Bios:
Kai Tang is a Technical Marketing director in the Qualcomm Research Group. His current role is responsible for driving 3G and 4G technology evolution with operators and infra vendors in North America, with a focus on LTE Advanced and small cells. Kai joined Qualcomm in 2001 as a system engineer designing Qualcomm’s 3G mobile chipsets. Kai holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and an MBA degree, both from UCSD.
Norman Tyrrell is Director of Technical Marketing at Qualcomm Labs, Inc. In his current role Norman is responsible for business development in the Asia-Pacific region and technical marketing to promote advanced LTE capabilities to mobile network operators worldwide.
