On Dec 4 2012, the Foothill section PES Chapter and Eaton hosted a technical workshop with an inter-discipline flavor. A group of about 20 engineers from across-section of engineering disciplines, electrical, civil, and mechanical were represented all having a mutual interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) with emphasis on electrical lighting and transportation management systems (ELMS) in the age of the Smart Grid. Jim Frazer, a DOT Consultant and Principal Engineer of Gridaptive gave an overview of ELMS standard NTCIP 1213 focusing on ground fault safety for aging transportation infrastructure, lighting controls,
and energy metering management, presented the concept of adaptive roadway lighting, and discussed the integration of vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to grid communications with the Smart Grid. John Jansen, Eaton Senior Applications Engineer and Consultant gave an informative presentation on Eaton technologies supporting Smart Grid infrastructure and related design standards, while also including an overview of “EatonCity” utility for designing Smart Homes, Smart Transportation, Smart Factories, Smart Distribution, and Smart Energy. The presentations were well received by all in attendance with several non IEEE members expressing interest in joining IEEE and attending future section/chapter events.
