The IEEE Foothill Section and the students of the IEEE Student Branch / EES of DeVry University Pomona are pleased to announce the second lecture in the Photonics / Nanotechnology Series. For the second lecture, Professor Mohajeri will discuss this topic:
Semiconductor Optics: An Introduction to Optical Properties of Semiconductors—
“Quantum Confinement and Processes of Light Emission in Quantum Barriers”
Summary: In this lecture, a brief history of Quantum Mechanics and the De-Broglie wavelength of electrons will be given. Then, the quantum confinement process for electrons in Conduction Band will be described, according to Principals of Quantum Mechanics. Later, I will discuss how these Populated Confined Electrons can contribute to Emission of Photons in an Active Semiconductor thin layer to initiate a laser emission. These Confinements could be One Dimensional, called (Quantum Wires) or two Dimensional (called Quantum Well surfaces), and three Dimensional (called Quantum Dots).
Bio of Professor Hamid Mohajeri:
Prof Mohajeri received his PhD in Semiconductor Physics from the University of Hull, England. Subsequently he was a post-doctoral Fellow at University of Hull, at University of Swansea, and a Visiting Research Scholar at University of Arizona. He has been a Professor, CEIS at DeVry University Pomona from 1999 to present.
In our first lecture, held on August 14, 2013, Professor Mohajeri gave an introduction to the field of Photonics and Nanotechnology. This began with consideration of the excitation of an electron from the valence band of a semiconductor into the conduction band. The concept of a band gap was developed. From here we progressed into an overview of custom crystal design and growth via metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) techniques. All this is done to obtain semiconductors with the desired bandgap and physical / chemical properties.
