To ALL our IEEE Foothill members,
Here is information on upcoming events in the Wireless and RF world that should be of interest to you. The IEEE Radio and Wireless Week is coming to Newport Beach later this January. In addition to the conference itself, there are three related events that you can attend for either no fee or a nominal fee (for the two workshops).
The workshops are all-day meetings that will cover some details of wireless design. These are “Tutorial Workshop on RF and Microwave Filter Design” to be held on Monday, January 20, 2014; and the workshop on “Characterization of High Power Devices” to be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Please read below for more detail on the engineering topics that will be explained in these workshops. In addition, you would have time during the breaks in these presentations to visit the industrial exhibits that are part of the IEEE Radio and Wireless Week.
These workshops should be of particular interest to students interested in seeking employment in the ever expanding wireless communication fields. Even if you are in this field, these workshops would give a comprehensive view of the design and development areas, and worth your attendance. Just review the workshop syllabus given below. Please note the sign-up dates and sign-up procedure.
Our thanks to our IEEE friends in the Coastal LA Section and the San Fernando Section for alerting us to these specific events associated with IEEE Radio and Wireless Week.

Saturday Jan 18, 1:00pm – 4:00pm
The 5 new Distinguished Microwave Theory and Techniques Lecturers (for the years 2014-2016) will give 30 min. versions of their Talks at the TCC –Winter Technical Meeting. The Talks will be on Saturday Jan 18, 1:00pm – 4:00pm at the IEEE 2014 Radio & Wireless Week (RWW) Site (Marriott Spa & Resort, Newport Beach). You need not attend RWW to attend the TCC-Winter Technical Meeting and hear these speakers’ presentations, and ask them questions afterwards.
The 5 Speakers are:
Prof. Robert H. Caverly (RF Aspects of Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
Dr. Goutham Chattopadhyay (Terahertz Radar for Stand-Off Through-Clothes Imaging)
Dr. James J. Komiak (Microwave and Millimeter Wave Power Amplifiers: Technology, Applications, Benchmarks, and Future Trends)
Prof. Jose Carlos Pedro (The Wonderful World of Nonlinearity: Modeling and Characterization of RF and Microwave Circuits)
Dr. Andreas Stelzer (Integrated Microwave Sensors in SiGe with Antenna in Package)
Here is your opportunity to hear shortened state-of-the-art talks in MTT and related electromagnetics in a single afternoon.

Sunday Jan. 19, 19:00 – 20:30
Radio and Wireless Symposium Presents a Panel Session – Future Wireless Communications
Moderator: Dr. G. P. Li, University of California, Irvine
Panelists: Russell Hannigan, Intellectual Ventures
Julio Navarro, Boeing
Yahya Rahmat-Samii, UCLA
Dan Sievenpiper, UCSD
John S. Walley, Broadcom
Room: Newport Coast Ballroom
Abstract: In the past decade, the exponential growth of mobile devices, big data, social
media, and cloud services have driven the creation of a hyper-connected environment.
In this environment the internet and its associated services are accessible and
immediate, people and businesses can communicate with each other instantly, and
machines are closely interconnected with each other. As wireless communication
continues to evolve, the relationships among individuals, consumers and enterprises,
and citizens and the state will all be redefined. The future wireless communications
ecosystem will introduce new opportunities to increase productivity and well-being by
redefining the way business is done, generating new products and services, and
improving the way public services are delivered. However, wireless communication will
also bring about new challenges and risks in terms of security, cybercrime, privacy, the
flow of personal data, individual rights, and access to information in clouds.
There is no doubt that the rapid changes and consequences of living and working in a
hyper-connected world will directly impact the development, deployment and delivery
of communication technologies over the next decade and beyond. But what will those
global transformations be and what roles will industry, government, and, ultimately, the
end-user play.

Monday Jan. 20, 9:00 – 17:00
Tutorial Workshop on RF and Microwave Filter Design
Organizer and Speaker: H. Clark Bell
This course will present design basics for passive RF and microwave
filters. Included will be discussions of performance parameters, types of
filter responses, estimating filter performance, characteristics of various filter
technologies, specifying filters realistically to avoid surprises, and use of filter
design software. Specific topics will include two-port parameters; lowpass
and highpass ladders; Chebyshev filter; immittance inverters and narrowband
design; resonator Q, delay and loss, and lossy coupling; TEM bandpass
filters and bandstop filters; waveguide bandpass filters; general coupledresonator
prototype; loss approximation, the elliptic function filter;
realization polynomials and immittances; bandpass filters with cross
couplings; dual mode filters; environmental effects on filter performance.
Held in Grand Pacific Ballroom E
Registration at http://rww2014filter.eventbrite.com Registration closes Jan. 15

Tuesday Jan. 21, 9:00 – 17:30
Exhibition, Demo Track, and Wireless Apps talks
Wednesday Jan. 22, 9:00-17:00
Characterization of High Power Devices
Organizer: Steve Dudkiewicz
Speakers: David Ballo, Stephane Dellier, Tony Gasseling, Al Lorona, Gary Simpson
Device characterization is an essential process in many aspects of
research, development and testing of RF and microwave devices. To
the inexperienced, this might seem intimidating or even scary. In this
course, we will explore various interconnected topics of device
characterization that form the amplifier design flow. Topics include
pulsed IV and S-parameters for compact model extraction, load pull
for model validation and measurement, amplifier design and IC
stability analysis, X-parameter modeling and system-level simulations.
Held in Grand Pacific Ballroom E
