This summer, many of the world’s best robots took over a venue in the Foothill Section, the grandstands and track of the LA County Fairgrounds in Pomona CA, for the DARPA Robotic Challenge Finals – World Championships (June 5-6, 2015). The UCR IEEE Student Chapter played a key role at the event by hosting a booth with events for the younger robot designers and fans; mentoring them in robotics development in their booth work tables. Please enjoy some photos taken by UCR Students (submitted by Alberto Tam Yong) and by Computer Society Chair, Bill Grist. An online search will also yield many videos of the industrial control tests the robots had to perform plus the driving course they had to negotiate in order to compete for the championship. Note that the Republic of Korea (Team KAIST was the winner)
and the USA Teams took home over $3.5 million in prize money. Some humorous youtube videos also show their failings; falling over or getting stuck at a key point in the tests; but make no mistake, they are improving rapidly and will be taking over many dangerous tasks in the future.
Other various photos at the Finals event are shown below the UCR booth pictures.
