IEEE Foothill Trip Report:
You may want to see what happens on the worldwide ham radio Field Day which I attended locally in Upland this year, and took another class on Ham Radio in the shadow of Mt. Baldy. The field location was Mt San Antonio Park (also known as Flowers Field for Little League baseball, etc.). They did ham license testing also plus broadcast on remote power for 24 hours with several Ham frequency stations. Please take a look at this report on their ham stations, and especially the antennas they set up. This event simulates a major emergency (earthquake?) response as no power hookups were allowed (only solar, massive batteries from forklifts or cars, or personal generators were used). They used a special ham radio mesh network for their internet connections at each station. They accessed ham radio repeaters on a mountaintop nearby above Claremont near the TV and cell towers, a ways below Mt Baldy.

The all digital station, the satellite reception station (with custom home made antenna), the newbie station, and about 5 other frequencies with amazing antennas were all outstanding! Great job by the Rancho, Montclair, Upland ACS, ECS, CERT Team to pull this off (almost half of the ham license holders helping out at Field Day were women techies!). They made contact with ham operators all around north america and beyond, including satellites and the space station! Many students and parents stopped by on Saturday to check out this learning event.
