WiE Mini-Workshop of Local Robotics Company ROBOTIS America
On September 28, a team of students and faculty from Cal Poly Pomona attended an IEEE Foothills Section Women in Engineering (WiE) event at an amazing robotics company called ROBOTIS America. IEEE Foothill WiE Chair Dr. Jenny Yu, IEEE Foothill IEEE Microwave Theory & Techniques (MTT) & Antennas and Propagation (APS) Vice Chair Professor Jerry Herder, CPP ECE Robotic Arm Senior project Team Leader Serena Castillo, CPP ECE Power Management System Senior Project Team Manager Alden Caterio supported the event. Brandon Antillon, a ROBOTIS Technical Specialist / STEAM Consultant and senior project industry advisor of Dr. Yu’s team, led the company mini-workshop where he taught the team about ROBOTIS’ state-of-the-art actuators [DYNAMIXEL Smart Actuators] and other robot-related products. He showed what was possible when their products are implemented into an actual robot and how easily the accompanied software can be used to control robots powered by DYNAMIXEL techonlogy. The mini-workshop also included a showcase of ROBOTIS’ operational robot kits. Some of the robots [ROBOTIS Mini Humanoids] were programmed to dance to the songs “Gangnam Style” and “Uptown Funk”, and the students were treated to some entertainment when 3 robots began to dance in perfect synchronization to each song during a demonstration. The whole team loved it! In the future, the students and faculty plan on working closely with ROBOTIS America. The team’s goals are to learn more about the wonders of robotics and to further the development and research of projects being conducted back at Cal Poly Pomona. With the support of ROBOTIS America, they firmly believe that they will succeed in their future endeavors!
