Advancing Grid Resilience: Grid-Forming Inverter-Based Resources and Emerging Standards – Dr. Julia Matevosyan, ESIG. December 18, 11am-12pm
On December 18, 11 am-12 pm in 2024, Dr. Julia Matevosyan explained how the growing trend of inverter-based resources (IBRs) in power systems has led to an increasing adoption of new resources with advanced grid forming capabilities (GFM). The webinar gave an introduction to grid-forming controls and expounded on advancements with GFM specifications and projects. Learn about the recent drafts of MISO, ERCOT, and ENTSO-E.

Distinguished Speaker: Dr. Julia Matevosyan[Bio]:
Julia is ESIG’s Chief Engineer and has more than 20 years of experience in the power industry. Prior to joining ESIG, Matevosyan was the Lead Planning Engineer of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). In her time with ERCOT, she worked on adequacy of system inertial response, system flexibility, frequency control and performance issues related to high penetration levels of inverter-based generation and ancillary services market design. Julia received her BSc from Riga Technical University in Latvia, and her MSc and PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden.
Advancing Grid Resilience: Grid-Forming Inverter-Based Resources and Emerging Standards
Abstract: As more power systems are reaching very high shares of inverter-based resources (i.e., wind, solar, battery storage), new resources with advanced capabilities, termed grid forming (GFM), are becoming increasingly important. As a result, more system operators are defining performance and testing requirements for GFM IBRs and now projects are being built to these specifications. The webinar will provide some introduction to grid forming controls and introduce the latest developments with GFM specifications (including the most recent drafts from MISO, ERCOT, and ENTSO-E) and GFM projects.
