Are you interested in learning about Photonics and Nanotechnology, a field that will grow in importance for EEs and IEEE members as the drive to make ever smaller, less power source intensive, and more versatile electro-optical devices continues? Professor Hamid Mohajeri of Devry University, Pomona will soon start a series of lectures on this topic. An advantage of this series of lectures is that they will be spread out over the coming year, so you can schedule your days for attendance in advance.
These lectures are sponsored by the DeVry University Pomona student Electronic Engineering Society, in junction with their IEEE Student Branch. They are open to ALL IEEE students and IEEE members in our IEEE Foothill Section.
Judging by the titles of this sequence of lectures, an attendee can start with learning the basic concepts of electrons and holes, valence and conduction bands, donor and acceptor levels, band gaps and excitation sources, and progress through to recent developments in quantum well structures and infrared detectors. All this would be useful to IEEE students and IEEE members. That these presentations will be given in a convenient Foothill area location is an additional plus. We encourage all our IEEE Foothill students and IEEE members to attend.
The lecture series titles, and planned dates for their presentation are:
(1) “Semiconductor Optics : An Introduction to the Optical Properties of Semiconductors”: Wednesday, August 14, 2013, 12:00 PM in Room 204
(2) “Quantum Confinement & Processes of Light Emission from Quantum Barriers”; October 2013 TBA (=to be arranged)
(3) “Fabrication and Properties of Quantum Well Hetero-Structures”; December 2013, TBA
(4) “Quantum Well Laser Diodes”; February 2014, TBA
(5) “Quantum Well Infrared Detectors Structure”; April 2014, TBA
(6) “Recent Developments in Fabrication of Infrared Detectors”; August 2014, TBA
For the first lecture, Professor Mohajeri will discuss this topic:
Semiconductor Optics: An Introduction to Optical Properties of Semiconductors
Summary: During this presentation I will be giving a brief history of the revolutionary electrical and discrete photon interaction properties associated with semiconductor materials, and later the discovery and development of their unique optical properties. The latter has gained attention in late 1970’s, due to the theoretical prediction, and subsequent laboratory demonstration, of quantum well lasers and other semiconductor nanostructures. This is the basis of the present opto- electronic advancements, and the reason for the huge commitment of $$$ capital that is assigned to Research & Development efforts for new and improved opto- electronic devices.
Band Gap theory and Optical Absorption of some important binary (for example GaAs) and ternary (for example HgCdTe) compound semiconductors will be discussed. Growth and manufacturing techniques of semiconductor by various methods will be presented. Finally, the current applications for some of these semiconductor materials will be described.
Bio of Prof H. Mohajeri:
Prof Mohajeri received his PhD in Semiconductor Physics from the University of Hull, England. Subsequently he was a post-doctoral Fellow at University of Hull, at University of Swansea, and a Visiting Research Scholar at University of Arizona. He has been a Professor, CEIS at DeVry University Pomona from 1999 to present.
