Engineers! The Missing Link to Native Fish Recovery:
How Engineers and Biologists are Working Together to Save the Santa Ana Sucker
Ms. Heather Dyer, Water Resources Project Manager and Fish Biologist
San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District
Ms. Dyer is a Water Resources Project Manager and Fish Biologist for the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water
District where she has been working on development of the Upper Santa Ana River Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP)
since 2014. She is leading the development of the Upper Santa Ana HCP, working on behalf of twelve public agencies
and many valuable water infrastructure projects for this region. The HCP will also implement recovery actions for the
Santa Ana sucker and 22 other special status species. Ms. Dyer fully expects to achieve recovery of the species and
removal of the Santa Ana sucker from the Endangered Species List by her retirement in 2039.

Directions:
: From eastbound Interstate 10: Take the University Street exit and
turn left onto University Street.
From westbound Interstate 10: Take the Cypress Avenue exit and
turn left. Drive two blocks to University Street and turn right.
Continue north on University Street 0.5 miles to the Colton Avenue
stop sign and make a right. After one block, turn right into the
parking lot behind the Tennis Courts. After parking, cross Colton
Avenue at the crosswalk and the University Club is on the north
side of the street and is in the complex to the right.
