The Joint IEEE Foothill / Orange County Section Nanotechnology Council (NTC) Chapter and IEEE Foothill CPPStudent Chapter held its Second seminar on April 18, 2019 at Cal Poly Pomona. The keynote speaker was Dr. Yadong Yin, Professor of Chemistry at UC Riverside who is a pioneering researcher in the field of nanostructured materials with responsive optical properties that can find applications in printing, sensing, signage, security documents, and displays. He presented recent progress on the development of chemical and assembly approaches for the fabrication of various nanostructured materials whose optical properties can be dynamically tuned by controlling the spatial arrangement of the nanoscale building blocks. He showed that many novel optical materials could be developed by manipulating the diffraction, refraction, birefringence, and electronic resonances through controlling the interaction between light and the nanostructures. The audience included many CPP students who said they had gained valuable information from this event. The joint IEEE Foothill / Orange County Section NTC chapter organizers Chair Professor Jenny Yu, Vice Chair Professor Yu Bai, Secretary Nick Massetti, CSUF IEEE student chapter President Steven Sagastume, IEEE Foothill Section Chair Mr. David Gonzalez, communications Coordinator Dr. Nick Ng, computer society Chair Dr. Tim Lin, IEEE Foothill CPP student chapter Leaders Christopher Mardoyan, Justin Frias, Jinwon Jang and Shannen Sharma supported the event.
There were 23 attendees with the majority being students. The event included networking and the student’s favorite – pizza. The chapter has its own IEEE listserv distribution list now including 100 addresses. Join the chapter list at https://listserv.ieee.org/cgi-bin/wa?A0=IEEESOCALNANO
Also in the works is a website at https://ieee-region6.org/socal-nano/ which is under construction.
Chapter organizer Cal Poly Pomona Professor Jenny Yu invited all to attend the next event which will be held in the Fall. She is forming the chapter Executive Committee and welcomes members to join.
